It is the oldest annual marathon in Poland, held since 1979. The marathon is organized by the non-governmental organization Fundacja Maraton Warszawski. The race usually takes place on the last Sunday of September. It is one of two marathons hosted in the city, alongside the Orlen Warsaw Marathon, generally held in April.

The Orlen Warsaw Marathon is an annual road running event over the marathon distance (42.2 km (26.2 mi)) that takes place in April on the streets of Warsaw, Poland. The event was established in 2013 and has Polish oil company PKN Orlen as its title sponsor.

Nailiya Yulamanova (RUS) came second in the Marathon, and was set to be upgraded to gold winner after Živilė Balčiūnaitė was disqualified. However, in July 2012, Yulamanova was also disqualified for doping, and her results from 20 August 2009 onwards were annulled due to abnormalities in her biological passport profile.
