Ballarat Technical School was founded as a boys' school in 1913, [5] and was officially opened in July 1915 by Sir Alexander Peacock. It opened in 1913 in a bluestone building in the grounds of Dana Street Primary School. In 1921 it moved to a custom built school in the grounds of the Ballarat School of Mines. [1] The Ballarat Junior Technical School is a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia.
On 6 September 2013, the Victorian Parliament passed legislation to establish Federation University Australia, [16] The name change officially began in 2014. The then Vice-Chancellor justified the name change as an attempt to broaden the reach of the university nationally and internationally, and in fairness to the campuses outside Ballarat.
