Queen Chrysalis has been usurping Shining Armor's power, weakening the shield to allow her Changeling army to invade Canterlot and take over Equestria. Celestia, who is overpowered by Chrysalis, implores Twilight and her friends to retrieve the Elements of Harmony to stop the Changelings. However, they are returned to Chrysalis.
Spike, concerned for Rarity, finds an old book in Princess Celestia and Princess Luna's old castle containing a spell that allows her to create anything she imagines on a whim. Rarity is slowly taken over by the book's magic and begins making troublesome glamorizations around Ponyville to suit her creative visions.
Princess Celestia learns of the reappearance of the Crystal Empire. Previously home to the Crystal Ponies over one thousand years before, the empire had been taken over by the tyrant unicorn King Sombra who enslaved the ponies and threatened to conquer Equestria; Celestia and her sister Luna had sealed King Sombra away in ice, but he cursed the empire to vanish as a last effect.
Learning that Celestia has never been in a play despite her love of theater, Twilight offers her the lead role, much to Celestia's glee. As Rainbow Dash excitedly spreads the word all across Equestria, however, Twilight is mortified by Celestia's poor acting skills and fears that she will humiliate herself in front of her subjects.
Invigorated by their fight against the Everfree Forest, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna start to take an active role in solving problems around Ponyville. As they were becoming a nuisance, Twilight persuades them to take a vacation and leave her and her friends in charge of Equestria, the sun, and the moon for the duration.
The show follows a studious unicorn pony named Twilight Sparkle as her mentor Princess Celestia guides her to learn about friendship in the town of Ponyville. Twilight becomes close friends with five other ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie, as they all teach each other the magic of friendship.
Twilight remembers that Princess Celestia had earlier sent her the notebook of unicorn wizard Star Swirl the Bearded, believing that Twilight can make sense of the incomplete spell on the last page. However, when Twilight read the spell, it inadvertently switched around the Elements of Harmony, affecting their respective bearers.
