Placitas is a populated place in Montecello Canyon just southeast of Monticello on Highway 142 in Sierra County, New Mexico, United States. The elevation of Placitas is 5,204 feet. [1] It has a population of 576 as of 2020. [2] The correct name of this town appears to be up for debate.
In the 1830s, Placitas, which at the time was known as Las Placitas, [5] was settled. [4] On February 24th, 1894, Las Placitas Presbyterian Church was founded. [6] [7] During the 1960s and 1970s, there were many hippie settlements near Placitas. These settlements include Sun Farm, Lower Farm, Little Farm, Dome Valley, and Tawapa.
In 1881 the first postmaster, Aristide Bourguet, renamed the town for Monticello, New York. The community continues today, though with a much reduced population. Today Monticello and nearby Las Placitas are home to several organic farms that use the irrigation system fed from the springs of Alamosa Creek. These farms produce fruits and vegetables.
As of the 2000 census, [9] there were 13,270 people, 6,113 households, and 3,618 families living in the county. The population density was 3 people per square mile (1.2 people/km 2).
