John Stainer was the eighth of nine children born to William Stainer and his wife Ann (née Collier) on 6 June 1840. At least three of the children died in infancy, and John was much younger than his brother, William, and his three sisters, Ann, Sarah and Mary. [ 1 ]
The Merry Play between John John the Husband, Tib his Wife, and Sir John, the Priest is a Tudor era farcical comedic interlude written in 1520 and first published in 1533 by English playwright John Heywood. It relates the tale of a common Englishman who believes his wife to be cheating on him with the local priest.
It is a book of hours, which is a Christian devotional book and a collection of prayers said at canonical hours. The manuscript was created for John, Duke of Berry, the brother of King Charles V of France, by Limbourg brothers Paul, Johan and Herman. [2] The book is now MS 65 in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France.
