The ecoregion is characterized by the presence of Afromontane species, which have an archipelago-like distribution across the highlands of Africa and are distinct from the lowland flora. Typical afromontane tree species are Nuxia congesta, Olea capensis, Podocarpus milanjianus, Prunus africana, Myrsine melanophloeos, and Syzygium staudtii. [1] [5]
Map of the region showing the Albertine Rift to the west. The Albertine Rift and the mountains are the result of tectonic movements that are gradually splitting the Somali Plate away from the rest of the African continent. The mountains surrounding the rift are composed of uplifted Pre-Cambrian basement rocks, overlaid in parts by recent ...

Most trees are evergreen, with only a few larger tree species ( Entandrophragma excelsum and Aningeria adolfi-friederici ) losing their leaves for a few days during the ...
The Afromontane sub-ecozone is a phytogeography distribution term for the plant species and their natural habitats in the mountains of sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula — within the larger Afrotropical realm. Afromontane ecoregions are found in the following biomes: Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests
