The first engine of modern Ford small block family was called the Fairlane V8, [3] and introduced for the 1962 model year as an option on the Fairlane and Meteor. It had a displacement of 221 cu in (3.6 L), from a 3.5 in (89 mm) bore and 2.87 in (73 mm) stroke, with wedge combustion chambers for superior breathing, and a two-barrel (2V) carburetor.
Ford continued to offer the FE series 352 in the 1963 full size, as well as 3 versions of the 390 V8 (regular, high performance, and police). Five different transmissions were offered for 1963. The first Y-block on Ford automobiles and F100 trucks was the 239 cu in (3,910 cc) version as released in 1954 with EBU casting numbers. The Y-block was the same displacement as the old Ford Flathead V8 that it replaced but with a bigger bore and a shorter stroke (3.5 x 3.1 in).
