The Carnegie application process segregates students by whether or not they are Gifted and Talented (G/T) in HISD. Students not already identified as G/T in HISD or attending a private school must take a test to see if they are G/T and provide other academic information while qualified HISD G/T don't need to provide anything more.
HISD has three athletic facility centers that were under its control as of June 30, 2013: Herman A. Barnett Sports Complex, Joe K. Butler Sports Complex, and the two-stadium Delmar - Dyer Sports Complex. Barnett has the capacity of 8,000 for American football and track games, 2,750 for basketball games, and 2,500 for soccer (football) games.

Police arrested a 16-year-old described by HISD officials as a "disturbed freshman." [11] In December 1991, Milby was one of the largest high schools in Texas, with 3,617 students.

[13] In June 2016 a group of eight Houston area residents, including alumni and parents, sued HISD to get an injunction to prevent the name changes; they did so after HISD did not accept their ultimatum to stop the name changes.
