The Criminal is a book by Havelock Ellis published in 1890. A third revised and enlarged edition was subsequently published in 1901. [1] [2] [3] The book is a comprehensive English summary of the main results of criminal anthropology, [4] a field of study which was scarcely known at the time of the publication of the volume.

Cesare Lombroso (/ l ɒ m ˈ b r oʊ s oʊ / lom-BROH-soh, [1] [2] US also / l ɔː m ˈ-/ lawm-; [3] Italian: [ˈtʃeːzare lomˈbroːzo, ˈtʃɛː-,-oːso]; born Ezechia Marco Lombroso; 6 November 1835 – 19 October 1909) was an Italian eugenicist, criminologist, phrenologist, physician, and founder of the Italian school of criminology.
The book deals with the practical applications of criminality and includes three parts. The first part is concerned with criminal anthropology and is an explanation of different categories of criminals as well as the psychology of criminals. This first part is a review of Lombroso's work and focusses on the physical characteristics of criminals.
The book is considered a seminal work in legal anthropology, described 75 years after its publication as having major "intellectual influence". [ 6 ] References

In addition to the "atavistic born criminal", Lombroso identified two other types: the "insane criminal", and the "criminaloid". Although insane criminals bore some stigmata, they were not "born criminals"; rather they become criminal as a result "of an alteration of the brain, which completely upsets their moral nature."
