As an archipelago, the Philippines comprises about 7,641 islands [1] [2] clustered into three major island groups: Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Only about 2,000 islands are inhabited, [3] and more than 5,000 are yet to be officially named. [2]
Administratively, the Visayas is divided into 4 regions, namely Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas. The Visayas is composed of 16 provinces, each headed by a Governor. A governor is elected by popular vote and can serve a maximum of three terms consisting of three years each.
The Visayas comprises 4 regions: VI to VIII and NIR; Mindanao comprises 6 regions: IX to XIII, and BARMM.
