Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is a series of reports that review the state and direction of the global environment, issued periodically by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The GEO project is a response to the environmental reporting requirements of UN Agenda 21 and to a UNEP Governing Council decision of May 1995.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It was established by Maurice Strong , its first director, after the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in June 1972.
UNEP's 2010 annual budget was only $217 million, compared with $4 billion for the World Food Programme and nearly $4.8 billion for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). [ 4 ] On the positive side, the implementation of the Stockholm Conference led to the creation of an action plan that consisted of three pillars.
