The theater opened in the 1910s, with a capacity of 1,000 people. In 1965, the theater became the "Town Theatre", eventually showing adult films and featuring live burlesque by 1967. In the 1970s, it was purchased by Dale Niedermaier and John May, refurbished and reopened as "Park West", the music venue and special events space May 11, 1977.

In 2012, the Harrisburg Heat of the Major Arena Soccer League returned to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center to play their home games in the Equine Arena. [8] The team returned to the New Holland Arena beginning with its 2014–15 season. [9] Boxing matches and monster truck rallies have also been held at the venue.
Supported by 24 flying buttresses, the arena roof encloses 85,000 sq ft (7,900 m 2). With over 1,000 pilings, the facility was constructed 10 feet (3.0 m) below the city's water table. The roof is a ribbed concrete dome, independent of seating bowl formed of sloped concrete beams supporting precast treads and risers which form the seating bowl.
Since 2014 the Indy Fuel hockey team has played in the arena. The Fuel are an ECHL team affiliated with the Chicago Blackhawks . The 2023–2024 season was the last for the Fuel at the Coliseum before they leave for the new Fishers Event Center currently under construction in suburban Fishers.
