George Bridges (c. 1762 – 13 March 1840) was Lord Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament. [1] He was the son of George Bridges of Gloucester and set up as a wine merchant in London, becoming a member of a London livery company in 1791. He was a Director of the Grand Junction Waterworks Company from 1814 to his death.
One of the founders and the first Chairman was the Rt. Hon. George Bridges, M.P. Lord Mayor of London [2] and an Alderman of London at the time. [3] The origin dates back to a public meeting held on 30 January 1820 at London Wall at which it was resolved to open at once a "subscription" in order to aid homeless people.
