Football Club Zestaponi is a Georgian football club based in Zestaponi. They play their home games at David Abashidze Stadium . Zestaponi was founded on 18 June 2004 by the initiative of the shareholders of JSC Giorgi Nikoladze Zestaponi Ferro-Alloy Plant .
It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of FC Zestaponi. The stadium is able to hold 4,100 people and opened in 1952. Zestaponi David Abashidze Stadium (former Central Stadium) was built by the Zestaponi Ferro-alloy Plant. A couple of matches were held on the stadium before its opening in 1951.
The local football club, FC Zestaponi, plays in the top league in Georgia and twice won the Georgian championship in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 season. The local women's basketball team was champion of Georgia in 2011.
At that time Zestaponi had their own club FC Metallurg Zestaponi. A new club, formed as Margveti Zestaponi , joined Pirveli Liga and was promoted in the first season. Margveti was a member of Umaglesi Liga and achieved their best season in 1995–96 by finishing runner-up.
Since 1990, when independent leagues were formed, the city of Zestaponi has been represented by several clubs in Georgian football divisions. FC Margveti spent eight seasons in Umaglesi Liga in the 1990s, twice reaching semifinals of the national Cup and once finishing the second, which paved the way for participation in UEFA Cup preliminary round.
