5 August 2003: 2003 Marriott Hotel bombing – A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb outside the lobby of the JW Marriott Hotel in Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta, killing 12 people and injuring 150. All those killed were Indonesian citizens with the exception of one Dutch businessman, one Danish citizen, and two Chinese tourists.
The JW Marriott brand was established in 1984, with the opening of the first hotel in Washington, D.C. [3] It was named as a tribute to J.W. Marriott, the founder of Marriott Corporation. In 1989, Hong Kong was the destination for the overseas launch.
The trigger for the JW Marriott bombing came in December 2002, when Indonesian police stepped up the hunt for Jemaah Islamiyah members while investigating the 2002 Bali bombings. Toni Togar, a JI member based in Medan, North Sumatra, was nervous, because his house stored all the explosives left over from JI's 2000 Christmas Eve bombings.
The hotel was closed for 2 weeks and reopened to the public on Monday, 3 August 2009 at 10:00 WIB. The 17th United States Ambassador to Indonesia's Cameron R. Hume attended the reopening of the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton Hotels on Wednesday, 29 July 2009 in Jakarta. The ambassador visited both hotels.
