Silver Mound is a sandstone hill in Wisconsin where American Indians quarried quartzite for stone tools. Tools made from Silver Mound's quartzite have been found as far away as Kentucky . The oldest have been dated to around 11,000 years ago, so they provide clues about the first people in Wisconsin. [ 3 ]

Unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found in the rock record from the Cambrian, in the early Paleozoic.The feldspathic quartz sandstone and orthoquartz sandstone of Chequamegon, Devils Island and Orienta formations make up the Bayfield Group which underlies the entire Lake Superior shoreline of the state from Chequamecon Bay to the St. Louis River in the west.
A large crack in the surface of the rock, called the cave's "lifeline", allowed rain water to seep into the stone. In the air, rain combines with carbon dioxide to form a weak carbonic acid. Though this acid is not very strong, it is strong enough to dissolve away the limestone after it seeps in through the "lifeline".

The park contains an ancient burial ground used by the Old Copper Complex Culture of early Native Americans, between 5,000 and 6,000 B.C.E. during the Copper Age.It was rediscovered in June 1952 by a 13-year-old boy who unearthed human bones while playing in an old quarry.
