A sari (sometimes also saree [1] or sadi) [note 1] is a women's garment from the Indian subcontinent. [2] It consists of an un-stitched stretch of woven fabric arranged over the body as a robe, with one end attached to the waist, while the other end rests over one shoulder as a stole, [3] sometimes baring a part of the midriff.
The traditional mundu-veshti [4] has evolved over time and women prefer to wear a single-piece saree rather than the original two-piece garment. Also, the original garments had pure gold borders, whereas the newer versions have red, green, orange etc. colours along with gold, to make them look more attractive.
Though earlier only elder generation women would pick them up, now many young girls choose them for their elegant looks. Prashant Kolhe, a management executive, said, "My grandmother used to wear a nine-yard sari. It would look great on her. She used to carry it very well. Depending on the intricacy of its designs and patterns, a sari can take from 15 days to a month and sometimes up to six months to complete. Banarasi saris are mostly worn by Indian women on important occasions such as when attending a wedding and are expected to be complemented by the woman's best jewellery.
