Early in his career Galbraith had much success as an amateur in his home state of California, winning the 1970 Northern California Open and finishing runner-up at the 1971 California State Amateur Championship and 1972 Pacific Coast Amateur.

The first was run by the California Women's Golf Association from 1906 to 1920 when it was re-organized.
