In tune with BMW's core values regarding handling dynamics, [33] the E46 was initially available with a rear-wheel drive layout and a 50/50 weight distribution. The E30 was the first 3 Series to be available in wagon and 4-door sedan body styles. G80 BMW M3. The M3 model was released in 2021. [64] All-wheel drive (xDrive) is optional on the G80 M3, [65] making it the first time that a M3 has not exclusively used a rear-wheel drive layout. [66] A manual transmission is only available on rear-wheel drive models. [67] [68] BMW announced the launch of the first-ever M3 Touring in June 2022.
It was powered by four-cylinder petrol, six-cylinder petrol and six-cylinder diesel engines, the latter a first for the 3 Series. The E30 325iX model was the first BMW to have all-wheel drive. The first BMW M3 model was built on the E30 platform and was powered by the high-revving BMW S14 four-cylinder petrol engine.
All-wheel drive was not available for the E36, unlike the previous (E30) and successive (E46) generations. The E36 was named in Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for every year it was on sale. [4] Following the introduction of its successor, the E46 3 Series in 1998, the E36 began to be phased out and was eventually replaced in 1999.
The M3 models based on the F30 3 Series were introduced in 2014. Designated F80 for the M3 (sedan) alongside F82 for the M4 (coupe), it is the first time an M3 has used a separate model code, and the first time an M coupe was designated M4. They are powered by the S55 twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. Production of the M3 ended in 2020. [47]
