A map of active and anticipated submarine communications cables servicing the African continent in 2020. However, a typical multi-terabit, transoceanic submarine cable system costs several hundred million dollars to construct. [61] Almost all fiber-optic cables from TAT-8 in 1988 until approximately 1997 were constructed by consortia of operators.

Fibre-optic Link Around the Globe (FLAG) is a 28,000-kilometre-long (17,398 mi; 15,119 nmi) fibre optic mostly-submarine communications cable that connects the United Kingdom, Japan, India, and many places in between. The cable is operated by Global Cloud Xchange, a subsidiary of RCOM. [1]
