The truck rides nice and level even with the bed full.If I was to order a new one right now for towing I would go with 3/4 or 1 ton 6.0/4.10.It just makes towing loads less stressful for you and your truck. 1/2 ton GMC/Chevy do a nice job,and they do weigh less.

My fifth GM truck bought new, June 2005. 1/2 ton Silverado work truck - 4x4, I always have tool boxes, ladder racks and usually plows on-board, that's how I make my living. Newest truck has tranny shift problem, GM is aware, has no fix.
The best truck I've used is a GMC 3/4 ton V8, gotta have automatic or you'll burn clutches. The limited slip rear end makes a big difference. A high output alternator, tranny cooler, big radiator, skid plates, and heavy front suspension (these sometimes come with the snow plow prep package) are great.
The Chevy 6.6, Dodge 5.9 and Ford 6.0 all have good/bad points. The Chevys from what I have read have the best transmission (Allison)& best mileage (acording to MotorTrend). This is best-in-class for a 1/2 ton, but get that tounge weight of the fiver and figure out what else you are going to have in or on the truck for additional accessories and people.
I have a 1979 Chevrolet 3/4 ton truck and the original steering works fine. I had a 1973 Chevrolet 1/2 ton C10 and the original steering worked fine. I had a 1949 Ford Woodside stations wagon and the steering was fine. I had a 1950 Ford stepside pickup and the steering worked fine.
