In 1930, the city of Sunnyvale acquired a 1,000-acre (4.0 km 2) parcel of farmland bordering San Francisco Bay, paid for with nearly US$480,000 (equivalent to $9,034,900 in 2024) raised by the citizens of Santa Clara County, [10] then "sold" the parcel for $1 to the US government as a home base for the Navy airship USS Macon.

SFO Museum was created in 1980 as a collaboration between the San Francisco Airport Commission and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and was the first museum in an international airport. [160] It was accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1999, and contains both permanent artwork and temporary exhibitions in more than 20 galleries.
