It is situated seven miles (11 km) west of Stanley, Idaho, in the Sawtooth Wilderness on land managed by Sawtooth National Forest. [2] The mountain can be seen from Highway 21 and from Stanley Lake. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains to the Salmon River via Crooked Creek and Valley Creek.
The lake is approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) southwest of Stanley. The lake is most easily accessed from the Iron Creek trailhead, which can be accessed from State Highway 21 via Sawtooth National Forest road 619. [1] The route to lake follows a combination of the Iron Creek trail, Alpine Way trail, and an unmaintained hiking trail to Goat Lake.
