The present fifty øre coin was introduced into circulation on 3 July 1989 after the demonetisation of the five and ten øre coins. Its obverse features the crown of King Christian V of Denmark. The coin is composed of a bronze of 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin. As of August 2024, 50 øre worth 7.4 US cents.
From then on, the only Norwegian coin in use with a value below NOK 1 was the 50-øre coin, which was also deprecated on 1 May 2012. The original value were the 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50-øre coins. The Danish 25 øre coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 October 2008. [2] The only Danish coin currently in use with a value below DKr 1 is the 50 øre.
From October 1992, the only coin in use in Sweden with a value below 1 kronor was the 50 öre coin. [2] On 18 December 2008, the Swedish Riksbank announced a recommendation to the Swedish government to phase out the final öre coin by 2010. [3] The coin ceased to be minted on 25 March 2009 [4] and ceased to be legal tender after 30 September 2010.
Coins denominated in values of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 25 øre were previously minted in Denmark, but they have been withdrawn. Now, the coin with the lowest denomination in circulation is the 50 øre coin. The rest of the circulating coins have denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 krone.
The coins differ in terms of size, weight and rim. Within each sequence the diameter and weight of the coins increase with their value. The 50 øre and 10 krone coins have smooth rims, while the rims of the 1 and 5 krone coins are milled. The rims of the 2 and 20 krone coins have interrupted milling.
