Until the late 1980s, Ace titles had two main types of serial numbers: letter series, such as "D-31" and "H-77", and numeric, such as "10293" and "15697". The letters were used to indicate a price. In January 1969, Ace Books switched from a letter-series code for its books to a numeric series. The number does not indicate sequence of publication, unlike the number in the letter series codes; instead it identifies the alphabetic position of the title.
