The McCurtain County Wilderness Area is a 14,087 acres (5,701 ha) wilderness nature preserve 25 miles (40 km) north of Broken Bow, Oklahoma. It has been owned by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. [1] It was designated a National Natural Landmark in December 1974 for its excellent example of a xeric upland oak-pine forest. Pine Creek Wildlife Management Area is a scientifically managed preserve of natural and native wildlife flora and fauna. It is located in Pushmataha County and McCurtain County, Oklahoma, adjacent to Pine Creek Lake, seven miles (11 km) north of Valliant, Oklahoma. Pine Creek WMA consists of 10,280 acres (41.6 km 2).
The WMA dates from 1947, when the State of Oklahoma purchased and established it as a deer preserve. At the time, the state's deer herd had been overhunted and had dropped to less than 500 animals. The state wildlife department nurtured a herd of native deer in the WMA and began exporting it to other parts of Oklahoma.
