The College of Human Medicine began training pre-clinical medical students in the fall of 1966 (26 students) and the fall of 1967 (23 students). [8] After their preclinical training, these students needed to transfer to other medical schools to finish the final two years of their medical school education. [8]
St. Mary of the Plains Hospital is now known as "Covenant Medical Center–Lakeside". [2] Covenant Health was created in 1998 when Methodist Hospital and St. Mary of the Plains merged. [5] [6] In 2009 Grace Health System doing business as Grace Medical Center acquired the 123-bed acute care Highland Community Hospital in Lubbock.

CCOM was founded in 1900 [6] as the American College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery by J. Martin Littlejohn, Ph.D., D.O., M.D. (1865–1947). The school was incorporated as a non-profit in Chicago, Illinois, to train physicians. It was the fourth osteopathic medical school to open in the United States. [7]
