Beethoven himself acknowledged the kinship of the two works. In a letter of 1824, when he was writing the Ninth Symphony, he described his project as "a setting of the words of Schiller's immortal ' Lied an die Freude ' in the same way as my pianoforte fantasia with chorus, but on a far grander scale." Beethoven was persuaded by the publisher Artaria, for an additional fee, to write a new finale, and to issue the last movement as a separate work (the Grosse Fugue, Op. 133). [172] Beethoven's favourite was the last of this series, the quartet in C ♯ minor Op. 131, which he rated as his most perfect single work. [173]
The most substantial movement in the symphony, the finale is in sonata rondo form with a fast tempo. [15] The metronome marking supplied by Beethoven himself is whole note = 84. This is the first symphonic movement in which the timpani are tuned in octaves, foreshadowing the similar octave-F tuning in the scherzo of the Ninth Symphony. [16]
