On January 15, 1926, the Reds purchased first baseman Wally Pipp from the New York Yankees for $7,500. Pipp, who would turn 32 before the season, played in only 62 games with the Yankees in 1925, batting .230 with three home runs and 24 RBI before being replaced by rising young star, Lou Gehrig.
