The Emergency Severity Index (ESI) is a five-level emergency department triage algorithm, initially developed in 1998 by emergency physicians Richard Wurez and David Eitel. The only medical intervention used prior to declaring a patient deceased is an attempt to open the airway. No further interventions or therapies are attempted on deceased patients until all other patients have been treated.
