It was developed in 1979 by the Swedish designer Gillis Lundgren, and IKEA have sold over 140 million units of the bookcases worldwide. Its popularity and global spread has led to its use as a barometer of relative worldwide price levels.
Gillis Lundgren (26 August 1929 – 25 February 2016) was a Swedish furniture designer and the fourth employee of IKEA. He designed the Billy bookcase of which over 60 million have been produced. [1] [2] [3] [4]
