Its county seat is Tekamah. [2] The county was formed in 1854 and named after Francis Burt, the first governor of Nebraska Territory. [3] In the Nebraska license plate system, Burt County is represented by the prefix 31 (it had the 31st-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922).
Tekamah was founded in October 1854 by Benjamin R. Folsom, and incorporated on March 14, 1855. [5] [6] The name is derived from the Omaha language, meaning "big cottonwood". [7] [8] [9] Its development was stimulated by the construction of railroads through the area, such as the Chicago & North Western, which have since been taken out of Tekamah.
Decatur Township is one of twelve townships in Burt County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 576 at the 2020 census. A 2021 estimate placed the township's population at 576. [1] The Village of Decatur is located within the Township.
