Find a Grave is a website that allows the public to search and add to an online database of human and pet cemetery records. It is owned by Ancestry.com.Its stated mission is "to help people from all over the world work together to find, record and present final disposition information as a virtual cemetery experience."
The memorial was erected c. 1907 –08 to honour Friederich Detleip Andreas Carstens, a Port Douglas publican and former Douglas Divisional Board Chairman. It was commissioned and paid for by his widow, Pauline Carstens, and presented c. 1907 –08 to Douglas Shire Council as a public memorial drinking fountain.
The site started in March 1997 as a personal web page called Cemetery Interment Lists on the Internet and was simply a list of links to websites with cemetery records. Thursday Island Cemetery was established c. 1887, ten years after the formation of a permanent settlement on the island.It contains hundreds of graves, including between 600 and 700 Japanese (mostly pearl-shell divers), entrepreneurs and fortune hunters of all nationalities, Torres Strait pilots, sailors and ships' passengers drowned at sea, as well as generations of Thursday Islanders.
