A son of the 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, Swale was trained by Woody Stephens and ridden by Laffit Pincay, Jr., both now members of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Swale's dam, the stakes winning mare Tuerta, was born with one eye. Her name means "one-eyed" in Spanish.
Seattle Slew (February 15, 1974 – May 7, 2002) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who became the tenth winner of the American Triple Crown (1977). He is one of only two horses to have won the Triple Crown while being undefeated in any previous race; the second was Justify who won the Triple Crown in 2018 and is descended from Seattle Slew.
Turner began to train the colt, named Seattle Slew, at Andor Farm in Monkton, Maryland. [3] Seattle Slew went undefeated in his two-year-old racing season and was named Champion Two-Year-Old Male. In 1977, the Turner-trained Seattle Slew became racing's tenth Triple Crown champion by sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
