Lake Balkhash, also spelt Lake Balqash (Kazakh: Балқаш көлі, Balqaş kölı, pronounced [bɑʟ̠ˈqɑʃ kɵˈlʉ]), is a lake in southeastern Kazakhstan, one of the largest lakes in Asia and the 15th largest in the world. It is located in the eastern part of Central Asia and sits in the Balkhash-Alakol Basin, an endorheic (closed) basin.
Lake Balkhash is located in the South-East of Kazakhstan in 3 regions of the country: Karaganda, Almaty and Zhambyl regions. In the North of the lake begins the border of the Kazakh melkosopochnik, in the West – the Betpak-Dala desert, in the South-the Chu-ili ridge, the Taukum and saryesik-Atyrau Sands.
The Ayagöz is fed by snowmelt from the Tarbagatai Mountains and is used for irrigation, flowing into the eastern end of Lake Balkash, although there is no longer much flow from the river into the lake. It flows through the Charyn National Park and into the Ili River, which is considered to be the largest artery of Lake Balkhash. The Charyn is 427 kilometres (265 mi) long, and has a drainage basin of 7,720 square kilometres (2,980 sq mi).
