Originally named Pont des Messageries maritimes, it was built in 1882 by Gustave Eiffel [1] [2] for the merchant shipping company Messageries maritimes, replacing a ferry route. The bridge was completely removed in 2005 during the construction of the Saigon River Tunnel and afterwards rebuilt, turning it from a road bridge into a footbridge.
However, a plan was already underway to construct a new port on the Saigon River upstream from the city. This site, called Newport, was in a sparsely populated area adjacent to Highway 1 and the bridge connecting Saigon with the newly developing Long Binh Post some 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Saigon.
