In the 1960s, the building began to show a few signs of deterioration, including sagging floors in the north wing. University officials were concerned about a potential fire. The building was closed in May 1968. Ohio State considered just demolishing the un-original north wing, though eventually found it best to replace the entire building. [4]
Platted in 1812 as a new city to be the State capital, Columbus was a small town until late in the nineteenth century. One of the major events in the evolution of the area was the decision to locate the State Agricultural College Grounds ( Ohio State University ) on the site of the Neil farm in 1870, south of the community of North Columbus.
The building is named after Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States and three-time governor of Ohio, who advocated for a newly established land-grant university in Ohio. [6] [7] Hayes Hall is currently occupied by the Department of Design, part of The Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences as of 2024. [5]
