Damien Steven Hirst (/ h ɜːr s t /; né Brennan; born 7 June 1965) is an English artist and art collector. [1] He was one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) who dominated the art scene in the UK during the 1990s.
The work was funded by the businessman Charles Saatchi, who in 1991 had offered to pay for whatever artwork Hirst wanted to create. The shark cost Hirst £6,000 [4] and the total cost of the work was £50,000. [5] Hirst asked Doris Lockhart for a loan to cover the cost of shipping the shark from Australia, but she gave him the required amount.
An April 2020 release called Severed Spots (drop #20) involved the purchase of a US$30,000 Damien Hirst spot print. After purchasing the work, MSCHF cut the individual spots out of the print, selling them for $480 each. A second work consisting of the leftover paper, titled 88 Holes, sold for US$261,400.
