The newspaper was first published in 1789 [1] as Tagblatt der Stadt St. Gallen.Its current name dates from 1910. [2] The paper is part of St. Galler Tagblatt AG of which 70% is owned by NZZ Mediengruppe, [1] parent company of Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
The paper has its headquarters in Basel [1] and the Basel canton. [2] The newspaper is owned by the Basler Zeitung Medien which also publishes the free daily newspaper Baslerstab. The shareholders of Basler Zeitung are Tito Tettamanti (75%) and Martin Wagner (25%) [3] In 1997 Basler Zeitung had a circulation of 115,297 copies. [2]
It also partially owns the Austrian Kronen Zeitung and Kurier. [5] In December 2010 WAZ Mediagroup sold all its assets in Bulgaria to a joint venture between Austrian investors and local tycoons. Until then the company had owned the two largest daily newspapers Trud and 24 hours, the weekly newspaper 168 hours, and a large portfolio of magazines.
