Initially, US Route 21 (US 21) traveled from Marietta to Cleveland. [7] In 1962, I-77 debuted in Akron and Canton. [8] By the end of 1971, US 21 was decommissioned in Ohio in favor of I-77 which was nearly complete. [9] It was eventually finished in 1976 with the final connection being opened in Independence. [10]
It is one of nine routes to enter downtown Cleveland at Public Square. The route's first few miles are as a limited-access freeway from I-76 and I-77, heading north. The freeway section of the highway has 17 interchanges, and is cosigned with SR 59 for a short distance from Perkins Street in Akron to Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls.
