The community later became known simply as the Oblates of St. Frances of Rome. Frances herself remained in her own home, nursing her husband for the last seven years of his life from wounds he had received in battle. When he died in 1436, she moved into the monastery and became the superior. [5] She died in 1440 and was buried in Santa Maria Nova.
St. Frances (1378-1440) was a native and noblewoman of the city who had wanted to be a nun when she was a child. Despite being compelled to enter into an arranged marriage with a wealthy and aristocratic member of the papal military forces, she and her husband were happily married.
In 1827, the Diocese of St. Louis assumed jurisdiction over the western half of Illinois. In 1834, the Vatican erected the Diocese of Vincennes, which included both Indiana and eastern Illinois. [11] The first Catholic church in Quincy, St. Peter's was opened in 1839 and [12] the first church in Alton in 1843. [13]
Following her death in 2008, the St. Joseph's Church would be referred to by that nickname as a memorial to her. St. Francis Xavier Church began in 1904 and would merge with St. Joseph Parish in 2019 with much controversy. [4] Saint Francis Xavier Church is located in Wilmette, at the corner of Linden Ave and 9th Street.
In 2001, he was named pastor of St. Frances of Rome Parish in Cicero, Illinois, serving there for 15 years. Bartosic assumed the additional pastoral duties at Our Lady of Charity Parish in Cicero in 2009. [ 1 ]
