The club was founded in 1887 by Arthur E. Stillwell as the Fairmount Cycling Club, a bicycling club in Fairmount Park in Kansas City. In 1893, the club changed its name to the Kansas City Athletic Club. In the early 20th century, it was nationally known for fielding championship Amateur Athletic Union teams.

Grain Valley left the conference at the end of the 2017-18 school year and joined the Suburban Kansas City Conference. Warrensburg replaced Grain Valley. Center and Clinton were added beginning in the 2020-21 school year. Excelsior Springs departed after the 2021-22 school year and followed Grain Valley to the Suburban Kansas City Conference.

The Central Missouri Activities Conference, or CMAC, is a high school athletic conference comprising large-size high schools located in Mid-Missouri. The conference members are located in Boone , Camden , Cole , and Pettis counties.
