Adjustable fairlead (lower right) leading to winch on sailboat Fairlead (Chock style) Three mooring lines running through fairlead on a Royal New Zealand Navy ship.. A fairlead is a turning point for running rigging like rope, chain, wire or line, that guides that line such that the "lead" is "fair", and therefore low friction and low chafe. [1]
It is a large strong rope, wire or rod extending from the upper end of each mast and running down towards the deck of the vessel in a midships fore-and-aft direction. The shrouds serve a similar function but extend on each side of the mast and provide support in the athwartships direction.
It is attached either at the very top of the mast, or in fractional rigs between about 1/8 and 1/4 from the top of the mast. The other end of the forestay is attached to the bow of the boat. [1] [2] Often a sail is attached to the forestay. This sail may be a jib or a genoa.
Crew on a square rigged ship climbing onto the main-top using the Jacob's ladder. The second type of Jacob's ladder applies to a kind of ladder found on square rigged ships. To climb above the lower mast to the topmast and above, sailors must get around the top, a platform projecting from the mast.
Most fore-and-aft rigged vessels have the following types of standing rigging: a forestay, a backstay, and upper and lower shrouds (side stays). Less common rigging configurations are diamond stays and jumpers. Both of these are used to keep a thin mast in column especially under the load of a large down wind sail or in strong wind.
Topside: the top portion of the outer surface of a ship on each side above the waterline. [1] Underdeck: a lower deck of a ship. [21] Yardarm: an end of a yard spar below a sail. Waterline: where the water surface meets the ship's hull. Weather: side or direction from which wind blows (same as "windward"). [16]
