A company named "Fibre Fab" was established in the UK in 1970 that produced fiberglass body kits for Volkswagen chassis. Despite the similar name, they were not related in any way to Fiberfab in the US or any of its foreign branches. Fibre Fab was founded by partners Robert Taylor, Anthony Hill, and Trevor Pym in Crowthorne, Berkshire.
In 1951 Darrin designed the Kaiser Manhattan, which had a fiberglass body. In 1952 the sports car Kaiser Darrin was presented. [4] This car competed with the Chevrolet Corvette and was marketed as an alternative to spartan foreign roadsters such as MGs and Austin Healeys. [4] His last car was the DKW Flintridge, an open two seater.
The car was available as a complete kit for around £735 or fully built for £930 and about 150 were made. [1] Production declined rapidly after 1967 but the last body was made in 1973. [1] They attempted to introduce the model in the US in 1970. [6] The body moulds are now owned by the Rochdale Owners Club. [1]
Bill Tritt, at the time, was building small fiberglass boat hulls in his Costa Mesa, California, factory and he convinced Ken that fiberglass was the ideal material for the hot rod body.
