The painting was exhibited at the Charlottenborg Exhibition in 1879. It was for sale for DKK 3,500 but did not find a buyer. After her death, it was sold at an auction of her estate in 1883 for DKK 2,100 to Ida Marie Suhr. [4] She later endowed both her estate Petersgaard and the painting to her nephew Jens Juel.
The first notable artist to paint in Skagen was Martinus Rørbye (1803–1848), one of the central figures of the Golden Age of Danish Painting. His first visit was in 1833 but he returned towards the end of his life in 1847 and 1848. He is remembered in particular for his Men of Skagen on a Summer Evening in Fair Weather painted in 1848. [1]
