Santa Clara (/ ˌ s æ n t ə ˈ k l ær ə / SAN-tə KLARR-ə; Spanish for "Saint Clare") [8] is a city in Santa Clara County, California. The city's population was 127,647 at the 2020 census , making it the eighth-most populous city in the Bay Area .
In the 1870s and mid-1880s, the heart of downtown commercial activity had moved northward along Market Street (immediately west of First Street and part of the Pueblo) to the Santa Clara Street intersection. However, by the latter part of the 1880s, Santa Clara and First Streets became the new focus for downtown business activity.
San Salvador Street — Spanish for Holy Savior. Santa Ana Ave — named after Saint Anne; Santa Clara Street — named after Mission Santa Clara. San Jose's early downtown streets were named after the 21 California Missions. Schiele Avenue — named after Charles M. Schiele, who owned the Pacific Hotel, was on the city council.
