A structural insulated panel, or structural insulating panel, (SIP), is a form of sandwich panel used as a building material in the construction industry. SIP is a sandwich structured composite , consisting of an insulating layer of rigid core sandwiched between two layers of structural board.
Rigid panel insulation, also known as continuous insulation [13] can be made from foam plastics such as polyisocyanurate or polystyrene, or from fibrous materials such as fiberglass, rock and slag wool. Rigid panel continuous insulation is often used to provide a thermal break in the building envelope, thus reducing thermal bridging.
Sandwich panels have λ-values from 0.024 W/(m·K) for polyurethane to 0.05 W/(m·K) for mineral wool. Therefore, they can achieve different U-values depending on the core and the thickness of the panel. The installation of a system with sandwich panels minimizes thermal bridges through the joints.
