In order to reduce power consumption of regulation (and thus to remain thermally feasible), these regulators are of switch-mode power supply design [citation needed]. To keep conduction losses at bay, it is desirable to transport the same power on the higher-voltage +12 V rail at lower current, instead of on +5V at higher current.
A voltage regulator module (VRM), sometimes called processor power module (PPM), is a buck converter that provides the microprocessor and chipset the appropriate supply voltage, converting +3.3 V, +5 V or +12 V to lower voltages required by the devices, allowing devices with different supply voltages be mounted on the same motherboard.
A voltage regulator is a system designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage. It may use a simple feed-forward design or may include negative feedback. It may use an electromechanical mechanism, or electronic components. Depending on the design, it may be used to regulate one or more AC or DC voltages.
The input is left side, the output with load is right side. The switch is typically a MOSFET, IGBT, or BJT transistor. A buck converter or step-down converter is a DC-to-DC converter which decreases voltage, while increasing current, from its input ( supply) to its output ( load ). It is a class of switched-mode power supply.
Regulated power supply. A regulated power supply is an embedded circuit; it converts unregulated AC (alternating current) into a constant DC. With the help of a rectifier it converts AC supply into DC. Its function is to supply a stable voltage (or less often current), to a circuit or device that must be operated within certain power supply limits.
Linear regulator. In electronics, a linear regulator is a voltage regulator used to maintain a steady voltage. [ 1] The resistance of the regulator varies in accordance with both the input voltage and the load, resulting in a constant voltage output. The regulating circuit varies its resistance, continuously adjusting a voltage divider network ...
