James Alan Gell (born 1974 in North Carolina) is an American who was wrongfully convicted of first-degree murder in 1998 and sentenced to death in Bertie County, North Carolina, at the age of 22. He served nine years as an inmate on death row before being acquitted in a second trial in 2004; he was freed from prison and exonerated that year.
Joseph Julian "Monk" Harrington (February 18, 1919 – September 10, 2008) was a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1963 to 1988, representing the 1st District. During his last two terms in office (January 1985 – December 1988), Harrington, a Democrat, served as President pro tempore.
