The 9mm Largo Astra modelo 400, patented by Pedro Careaga, was selected for the Spanish Army in August 1921, and was also adopted by other Spanish Armed forces. Astra pistols were supplied to Republican Spain and to the Basque government which controlled the plant until the Bombing of Guernica in April, 1937.
The 9mm Largo was developed by Theodor Bergmann and Hugo Schmeisser for the Bergmann–Bayard 1903 pistol. According to Janes, the Spanish military loads had a muzzle velocity of 400 m/s (1,300 ft/s) and a muzzle energy of 656 J. [1] While it's a powerful round, it was used in unlocked breech weapons such as the Astra pistol.
In France, the Model 400 was nicknamed “mange-tout” (eats everything) because its principal characteristic was to allow ammunition as varied as 9mm Largo (the original caliber), 9×23mm Steyr, 9×19mm Parabellum, 9mm Glisenti, 9×20mm Browning Long, .38 ACP, and .380 ACP (also known as 9mm Short, 9mm Corto, or 9mm Kurz).

While the Army eventually adopted the Astra Model 400, the Guardia Civil would adopt the Model A instead. In 1922, Star began producing the first Model B, which was essentially a first Model A in 9mm Parabellum, with a similar layout and a distinct "T" shaped extractor.
